Whereas with cooperative, you’re going to stick close together, support each other, and then you’re sharing ammunition and loot. Instead, you’re going to rely on telling each other about the ammunition you’re not using, and helping the other if they’re a lower level than you. The difference between these two is that when you choose competitive, you and your partner are not leveling together and you’re going to be vying for the same ammo caches. Pick the option you want, and then select if the game is going to be competitive or cooperative. When you start up the game, you’re going to get the option to choose the difficulty. From the very main menu, turn on a second controller and press A on Xbox One, or the respective selection button on other platforms, to have the second player join the party locally. The game slows, stutters, and even outright freezes for seconds at a time. Opening up a menu when your co-op partner is in a firefight is basically a form of accidental griefing. The game’s menus aren’t the most efficient things in the world to begin with, but they absolutely destroy a local co-op playthrough at times. Things fair a bit better in performance mode, but it’s still not optimal, and still outdone by other games with local co-op.īut things really start to get dicey when it comes to navigating menus. On a PS4 Pro, the game chugs to a near-halt when the game’s graphical settings are focused on resolution, making it borderline unplayable. Obviously, split-screen in any game is going to cause a hit in framerate, but it’s especially woeful in Borderlands 3.
